Upgrading ArcGIS Portal running under a Local System account requires a key preparatory step: you must first change the account to a dedicated local or domain user account with a password before running the installer, as the installer needs to grant permissions to directories, which Local System can't easily do. After changing the account, back up your portal, run the new installer, and follow post-upgrade steps like updating the Web Adaptor, re-authorizing (if upgrading release series), and configuring SSL certificates, ensuring the new account has full permissions on critical directories (content, index, db, temp).
